Minoan civilization flourishes- The Minoan civilization was a Bronze Age Aegean civilization on the island of Crete and other Aegean Islands which flourished, starting at 3000 BC and ending at 1100 BC.
Mycenaean's settle and take control of Aegean Sea- The Mycenaean's were seafaring people, all of the city-states were close to the sea, but far enough away that if the city was attacked the citizens would be able to evacuate . They also used the sea for transportation and trading.
Trojan War- The story of the Trojan War is that it was caused by the abduction of Queen Helen of Sparta by the Trojan prince Paris. Helen’s husband Menelaus convinced his brother Agamemnon, king of Mycenae, to go on a quest to get her back. The epics of Homer lead the journey Agamemnon went on to retrieve Helen. Historians believe the war was caused by a fight for vital straights.
Homer writes the Odyssey and Iliad- A blind poet named Homer wrote the epic poems, the Odyessy and the Iliad. These stories were abpout the journey of a soldier's point of view of the Trojan war and his journey.
The Greco-Persian wars begin- The Persian Wars were, a series of wars fought by Greek states and Persia over a long period of time. The fighting was most intense during two invasions that Persia launched against mainland Greece. When the Greeks won it made Greek culture and political structures live long after the defeat of Persia.
Peloponnesian War breaks out- The Peloponnesian War was a Greek war fought by the Delian League led by Athens against the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta.
Socrates is executed- In 399 BC, Socrates was sentenced to death for not honoring the gods and for corrupting the youth. He drank a cup of hemlock his executioner handed him, walked around and then lay down, surrounded by his friends.
Plato established The Academy- When the original Academy was torn down Plato found a small garden and he opened a school for student who wanted to learn his philosiphy.
Aristotle tutors Alexander the Great- When Aristotle was seventeen or eighteen, he moved to Athens to continue his education at Plato's Academy. In 343 BC Aristotle was invited by Philip II of Macedon to become the tutor to his son Alexander.
Greek polis' take shape- The ancient polis' in Greece started to come together in 800 BC and there were over 100 polis'.
Age of Perciles- The golden age of Athenian culture flourished under the leadership of Pericles. He was a general of the arts and politician---”the first citizen” of democratic Athens, according to the historian Thucydides.
Alexander the Great conquers the Persian empire- Alexander ruled the largest empire of the ancient world. His victory at the battle of Gaugamela on the Persian plains was a win that insured the defeat of the former Persian King Darius III.
King Philip ll gains the throne as King of Macedonia- Philip came to the throne, when Perdiccas was killed. In this crisis Philip bought off his neighbors and, with a treaty, ceding Amphipolis to Athens.
