1900 - The Boxer Rebellion - An outbreak of anti foreigner violence in a series of cities in China. China is not starting to become critical of the emperor because they have new ideas from the west, the idea that you can question your superior has arisen.
1911 - The last Emperor will fall - The end of the Manchu dynasty. The generals turn against the emperor. Key general is General Yuan, he will effectively take the army away from the emperor.
1911 - 1916 The Yuan Republic - Sort of like a military republic but it doesn't live long enough to truly establish itself. He dies in 1916 and the republic dies with him.
1916 - 1924 The Era of the Warlords. China will fragment into a series of fragmented regions controlled by warlords. The warlords of regions fight against each other. During this time there is a lack of a central government. The regions were powerful autonomous states.
Starting notion of Chinese Nationalism. 1912 - Key parties to look at: GMD (Guo Ming Dang) - The Nationalists run by Sun Yatzen. In 1924 the leadership of the GMD dies and war replaced by Chiang Kaishek.
1921 - The GMD and the CCP create the First United Front - They work together r to start defeating the warlords.
1921 CCP (Chinese communist Party.)
1924 Chiang Kaishek took power of the GMD - he inherits the first united front and will initially work with it.
1927 The White Terror - didn't eradicate the CCP, the communist flee to a huge mountain range in south eastern china and formed the Jianxi Soviet (communist communities).
1934 - GMD armed with new weapons from Germany, they go on the offensive and begin bombarding the CCP communities. This leads to The Long March. The communists leave Jiangxi in October 1934 and for a year they make their way Yenan.
1927 - The United front is working on the northern expedition to remove the last remaining warlords. Chiang Kaishek will strike and turn on the CCP, imprisoning and killing communist in major Chinese cities. - The White Terror. It was an attempt to eradicate the communists so they would no longer function as an opposition. The white terror was concentrated in cities. Communists were beheaded, imprisoned, killed etc...

Late 1936/37 - Establishment of the Yenan Soviet. The communists stay and prosper. As they arrive in Yenan Mao's in the party position has greatly escalated.

1937 - 2nd United Front - Chiang Kaishek was captured by his own people and was given to the CCP. The CCP didn't kill him instead they forced him to sign the 2nd United Front.

1945-1949 Chinese Civil War. The members of the red army are willing toddy for their stand, this spirit comes from The Long March. Eventually the North falls and the GMD are defeated, some members flee to Taiwan.
