1833: Chile annexes part of Bolivia and gains access to large amounts of nitrate and copper these are its biggesst exports
1891: Civil war occurs
1900: Radical and Socialist parties are formed
1925: Class ic Chilean democracy is established and a new constitution is formed. Presidential rule and popular elections are reestablished
1973: Violent overthrow of Salvador Allende through military coup. Super surprising to everybody and marked a period of torture and death
1970: Socialist Salvador Allende leads the leftist coalition that was geared toward agrarian form which fueled class conflict. U.S. also played a roe in economic destabilization because they feared socialism
1974: Neoliberal military junta takes control. Wanted to eradicate marxism. inherited terrible economy. Looked to the Chicago boys for help
1979: Pinochet declares himself as president. organized labor was minimized, decentralized political administration, junta persecuted socialists and communists. Pinochet wanted to legitimize authoritarianism
1983: Economic cataclysm. Unemployment skyrockets to 33%, debt was enormous. Pinochet was blamed
1986: Democratic Alliance emerges (christian democrats) and defeats Pinochet.
1990: Christian Democrats elects Aylwin and creates 20 years of uninterrupted rule for CPD party. They rule througha free market economic model, and social programs
2000: Party systems modern day are solidified. Multiparty System: National Renovation (RN)-center right Independent Democratic Union (UDI)-libertarian and populist Christian Democratic Party (PDC)-Center The Party for Democracy/ Socialists (PS/PD)-center-left Communist party of chile/revolutioary (PCCH)-left
2005: CPD and opposition negotiate following reforms: -no appointed senators -no presidential authority to dismiss military -prez term cut from 6 to 4 years

1891-1924: Parliamentary Republic. Congress dominated the presidency. Political and fiscal chaos occurred there was a lot of irresponsible partisanship.
1958-1964:Conservative Jorge Alessandri fueled a leftward drift, radicalization, and polarization that alienated the center left and left that suffered in current socioeconomic programs. This period saw the loss of flexibility and political stability.
1973-1989: Era of free market economic restructuring
