Slavery abolished from plantations.
Suriname given full autonomy from the Netherlands.

97% vote to approve new civilian constitution.
African slaves begin guerrilla war for new constitutional order.
Suriname becomes independent. More than a third of the population emigrate to the Netherlands.
Indigenous tribes lives peacefully. Arawak is the largest tribe at this time. Indigenous people lived off the coast, savannas, and rainforests.
The current President is Dési Bouterse, former army officer and military dictator.
Coup led by Desi Bouterse succeeds.
Democracy is restored.
Bouterse resigns as army commander.
Since 1991, the president is elected democratically.
Suriname is now a republic led by liberal democracy.
1980 - 1988 All presidents are in name only and were army-installed puppets by Bouterse.
