Steel Mill 1859 The first steel mill was created in 1859 and by 1860 over 300 people were employed. This not only gave numerous people jobs but it also produced us with a significant amount of steel used for many every day objects.
Typewriter 1868 by Americans Christopher Latham Sholes, Frank Haven Hall, Carlos Glidden and Samuel W. Soule The typewriter gave us a new way to communicate. We had a new social platform to share news with the world and help people have evidence of major events in history.
Telephone 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell The telephone was a more efficient way for people to communicate. It also allowed for long range communication
Skyscraper 1884-1885 The first skyscraper was built in Chicago. It allowed for more room for both businesses and families.
Elevator Elisha Otis designed the first steam powered elevator in 1853 The elevator allowed for a more efficient way of traveling the floors of larger buildings. It helped people avoid taking stairs and being late to wherever they needed to go.
Sewing Machine 1846 by Elias Howe The sewing machine let people mass produce clothing. It was also a more efficient and east wasy of sewing than by hand.
Washing Machine The earliest washing "machine" was the scrub board, or wash board, invented in 1797. The washing machine kept peoples' clothing clean and fresh. Even though it has been modified over the years, its purpose still remains the same and is used by many as a way to efficiently clean their clothing.
Automobile 1886, possibly by Karl Benz The first automobile was a great form of transportation. It was useful for both short and long distance trips.
Airplane On December 17, 1903, by Wilbur and Orville Wright The Wright brothers created the first airplane. Although it could only go about 10-15 feet in the air it was a great starting point for a new form of transportation. It allowed people to travel long distances without an automobile.
Diesel Engine 1890s by Rudolf Diesel Ruldolf created the first known diesel engines. It was used for automobiles, planes, and machinery making it easier for these things to work automatically on their own.
Radio 1901 by Guglielmo Marconi The radio allowed for a larger broadcast of world news and entertainment. It meant that everyone can hear the same thing at the same time and that if something happened in the world, most poeple would be informed at the same time.
