In 1957 Patrick Hanratty developed PRONTO (Program for Numerical Tooling Operations). It was a predecessor to CAD.
In 1962 Ivan Sutherland created Sketchpad, the first graphical user interface. It used a light pen to manipulate objects on a CRT.
The release of the IBM PC in 1981 allowed the widespread commercialization of CAD.
In 1983 AutoCAD was released by AutoDesk, the first major CAD software for the IBM PC.
In 1987 Pro/ENGINEER was released, the first major 3D CAD software. It ran on UNIX workstations because PCs in the 1980s were not powerful enough.
1995 saw the first 3D modeling CAD software on PCs with SolidWorks. It was quickly followed by Solid Edge, Inventor and others.
In 2011 Autodesk Inventor was released on Mac, giving Mac the possiblity to become a platform for engineering work. This was the latest major development in CAD.
In 1999 Autodesk Inventor was released, the most popular CAD software that is still used today.
In 1969 MAGI released Syntha Vision, the first solid modeling CAD program, however it was very primative and not very successful. It also did not have Parametric Design.

In the 1960s many companies commercialized CAD software including SDRC, Evans & Sutherland, Applicon, Computervision, and M&S Computing.
In the 1970s focus turned from 2D sketching to 3D modeling, including crucial work on 3D modeling from Ken Versprille and others.
