The Four Seasons, also known as Le Quattro Stagioni was written by the Italian and Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi in 1723 during the Baroque Era. It is by far his best known work and is also one of, if not the earliest example of program music during the era. The piece was written for strings, solo violin, and basso continuo, which were very notable in the Baroque Era. Vivaldi specialized in concertos, but what made The Four Seasons unique was the fact that the concertos were based off of the each seasons. Despite how different the features of each season are, the concertos that describe them within the music all invoke feelings of rejoicing and liveliness. Vivaldi also includes additions into the concertos to enhance them. "In the middle section of the Spring concerto, where the goatherd sleeps, his barking dog can be marked in the viola section" (“The Four Seasons.” Encyclopedia Britannica, Encyclopedia Britannica, inc.). Spring has the most additions, and another prominent one is a thunderstorm that prompts dynamic shifts throughout the concerto. Similarly, Vivaldi uses many high-pitched notes, randomly and repetitively to portray cold, harsh wind in the Winter concerto.
