-Whig->Democrat John Tyler - proslavery, called for annexation of Texas, supported claims for all of Oregon to sign over northern expansionists
-Democrat Martin Van Buren and Whig Henry Clay opposed
-expansion into Texas and Oregon was the central issue
-Democrats nominated James K. Polk because they didn't support Martin Van Buren's candidacy and did not trust Tyler
-Democrat James K. Polk was a slave owner and expansionist; insisted that US defy British claims and occupy all of Oregon Country
-Polk's strategy of linking Texas and Oregon had put him in the White House and Texas in the Union
