On December 27, Portugal and Britain signed the Methuen Treaty to increase trade. This agreement opened up new markets for Portuguese wine but hurt the local textile industry by allowing cheaper British cloth to be imported. With Britain banning French wine due to the War of the Spanish Succession (lasting until 1714), Portuguese wine became popular and profitable. However, over the next 40 years, the high demand led to issues with poor-quality wine, often altered and colored to look better, which eventually damaged the reputation of "port" wine.
