Roughly 5 million years ago, early hominids began walking on two legs, differing from past ancestors (7 million years ago) that had walked on four legs. Bipedalism served as a major divide between other animals and hominids as it freed up the use of hands for tools and more nimble maneuvers. It is important to note, however, that the gaits that immediately ensued bipedalism looked very different from homo sapien gaits today. There would need to be many more skeletal structure adaptations before the evolution of the walking and running gaits we know today.
