The Feitoria de São Jorge da Mina was established by the Portuguese in 1482. It was one of the first European trading posts on the West African coast. Located in modern-day Ghana, it served as a crucial center for trade, particularly in gold and later in the transatlantic slave trade. The fort was strategically built to secure Portugal's monopoly over the region's resources, protect their trading interests, and prevent other European powers from gaining a foothold. The significance of São Jorge da Mina began to decline after 1498, when the sea route to India was discovered, marking the start of the so-called India cycle, characterized by trade in Eastern goods, particularly spices.
