1 Jan 1492 Jahr - Tratado de Tordesilhas 1494
Beschreibung:
The Treaty of Tordesillas, signed on June 7, 1494, was an agreement between Spain and Portugal, mediated by Pope Alexander VI, to divide newly discovered lands outside Europe.
This treaty was signed in the Spanish city of Tordesillas, and established:
the division of the World into two hemispheres, divided by a meridian that passed 37
leagues west of the Cape Verde archipelago;
that the lands discovered and to be discovered to the east of this line would belong to
Portugal, while those to the west would belong to Spain.
Because D. João II did not accept Pope Alexander VI's proposal and insisted on the 37th
leagues west of the Cape Verde archipelago, it has been assumed that the Portuguese
king was already aware of the existence of territories to the west.
