In 1513, Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from the Americas. After crossing the Isthmus of Panama, he reached the shores of what he called the "South Sea" (later named the Pacific Ocean). Balboa’s discovery confirmed that the New World was not only a continent but also bordered a vast ocean to the west. His achievement opened the door for future Spanish exploration and expansion into the Pacific and marked a significant milestone in the exploration of the Americas.
