Shangqi, learning of and horrified by the level of violence his parents intend to enact, takes his sister and escapes the Ten Rings while they are distracted by their plans. They manage to get themselves onto a ship bound for Madripoor, where they live homeless on the streets under the names Jiang Yi (for him) and Jiang Bao Yu (for her).
