Sonya, a 19-year-old student, lived at 2402 98th Ave in Oakland, Alameda County, CA. She was last seen by family members at about 11:30pm on Monday, July 28, 1975.

At about 6pm on Tuesday, July 29 1975, Sonya's older brother, Ashraf A Higginbotham, 22yo — who lived at 9827 Elmar Ave at the time — went to visit Sonya at her duplex apartment after trying to call her on the phone, without response. According to one clipping, Ashraf, "went to his sister's place when neighbors phoned that 'a lot of people' were going in and out."

Ashraf tried to get in the front door, but was unable to because it was locked; he instead entered by climbing through a side window into Sonya's apartment. At that time — about 6pm — he found Sonya's body on a foldaway bed in her apartment. Sonya's throat had been cut. The coroner's office stated that she had been dead for 8-12 hours, putting her death at about 6am-10am on Tuesday, July 29, 1975.

According to the two modern sources — Wikipedia and SF Gate (though Wikipedia simply cites the SF Gate articles) — Sonya was found "sexually assaulted and stabbed to death" in her home.

Her names are alternatively spelled "Sonia" and "Higgenbotham." She may have also used the last name "Heron." Wikipedia and SF Gate both state that Sonya was killed in June 1975, however the only contemporary source that I have been able to find — a clipping from the July 30 1975 edition of the Oakland Tribune — states that she was found at 6pm on July 29 1975.

By March 2002 it was determined through DNA that Sonya was murdered by serial killer Charles Jackson. Also through DNA research, Jackson has been determined to have killed Ann Johnson (1975), Cynthia Waxman (1978), Henry & Edith Vila (1981), Betty Jo Grunzweig (1981), Gail Leslie Slocum (1981), and Joan Stewart (1982).

Sonya has been mentioned in various Z spaces, which is how I found out about her case.
