6 Jun 1944 Jahr - Normandy landing/D-Day
Beschreibung:
The Normandy Landing, also known as D-Day, took place on June 6, 1944 and was one of the most significant events of World War II. It marked the beginning of the end of the war in Europe. On this day, Allied forces, comprising of soldiers from the United States, Britain, Canada, and other nations, launched an audacious amphibious invasion on the beaches of Normandy, in northern France. The operation was codenamed Operation Overlord. The invasion began with overnight parachute and glider landings, massive air attacks, and naval bombardments. In the early morning, amphibious landings commenced on five beaches codenamed Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The soldiers faced heavy resistance from the German forces who were entrenched in fortifications along the coast. Despite the intense fighting and heavy casualties, the Allies were able to secure a foothold along the coast by the end of the day. This successful operation paved the way for the liberation of Paris later that year in August, and ultimately led to the defeat of Nazi Germany in May 1945. The Normandy Landing remains a symbol of international cooperation, strategic planning, and immense bravery of the soldiers who fought. It’s remembered as a turning point in history that changed the course of the war.
