1238 AD - today: The Alhambra, located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain, is a renowned palace and fortress complex notable for its Islamic and Spanish Renaissance architecture. Initiated in 1238 by Muhammad I Ibn al-Ahmar, founder of the Nasrid Emirate of Granada, it was further developed by later Nasrid rulers, with significant construction taking place in the 14th century. After the Christian Reconquista in 1492, the site served as the royal court of Ferdinand and Isabella, and Charles V added a Renaissance palace in 1526. The complex, which includes the Alcazaba fortress and the Generalife estate, functioned as a self-contained city with mosques, baths, workshops, and several palaces. Characterized by Moorish architecture, it features courtyards with water elements, intricate tile mosaics, carved stucco, and muqarnas. Today, the Alhambra is a major tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
