1230 AD: The treaty of Benavente was signed on December 11, granting Ferdinand III of Castile the Kingdom of León. This made him the first sovereign of both León and Castile under the Crown of Castile. Ferdinand III became one of Castile's most successful kings, ensuring the permanent union of the two crowns and leading a significant territorial expansion southward into the Guadalquivir Valley. This expansion capitalized on the weakened Islamic rule following the decline of the Almohad presence in the Iberian Peninsula.
