Iranian students led by militant clerics seized the American Embassy in Tehran, worried the US was planning another coup or would return the Shah to power. Demanded the US apologize for arresting Mossadegh.

Khomeini used the foreign hatred to boost his campaign.

US asked Bazargan to remove the students, when they did not comply, Bazargan resigned. The Revolutionary Council was left to run Iran.

Khomeini became the Supreme Islamic Jurist, with a final say over all political and religious matters.

The Council of Guardians, appointed lawyers and Islamic jurists, could review all Majli legislation.

Iranian people could elect a president, Majlis, and minicipal councils.
