On this date, the communist Khmer Rouge took over the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. This was considered to have marked the end of the Civil War. Pol Pot (the leader of this new regime) started sending the urban population of this city to labor camps in the countryside to help accomplish his goal of "agrarian socialism", effectively starting the genocide.
