Where: The wall was built inside East Berlin on East German territory
Who: The Berlin Wall was built by the German Democratic Republic during the Cold War
What: 155-kilometer-long wall which cut through the middle of the city center, surrounded by West Berlin
Why: The wall was made to prevent people from escaping to the West from East Berlin.
Impact: It couldn't stop thousands of people from leaving the country, or Western culture and values from entering.
