The Mau Mau revolution began in 1952, with Kenyatta, the leader of the revolt for independence, being imprisoned.

A violent conflict occurred between the Mau Mau soldiers and the British soldiers. The revolution was thought to be winnable by the military.

Independence for Kenya was unthinkable before 1957, but with Macmillan's "Winds of change" bringing independence to countries such as Nigeria and Cyprus in 1960, it became more and more possible.

In 1963, Kenyatta was released from prison and became the first president of the independent Kenya.
