The Marshall Plan, officially known as the European Recovery Program, was initiated in 1948 by U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall to provide extensive American economic assistance to European nations after World War II to rebuild their economies and prevent the spread of communism. Over four years, the United States disbursed more than $12 billion (equivalent to over $100 billion today) in economic aid to Western European countries, which significantly helped to revitalize the European economy and strengthen Western alliances.
