In roughly 621 BC, during the 39th Olympiad, Draco established his famous legal code. Draco's law code was written in response to the unjust interpretation and modification of oral law by Athenian aristocrats.

This is significant as these laws were very harsh, which is why contemporaries have coined the term "draconian" when referring to strict, grim laws. Draco's constitution was the first written constitution of Athens.
