13 Apr 1948 Jahr - Hadassah medical convoy massacre
Beschreibung:
The Hadassah convoy massacre occurred on April 13, 1948, when Arab forces ambushed a convoy en route to Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus, Jerusalem. The convoy, carrying medical and military personnel and escorted by Haganah militia, was attacked as part of the ongoing conflict following the UN Partition Plan. The attack resulted in the deaths of 78 Jewish individuals, including doctors, nurses, students, and Haganah fighters, as well as one British soldier. The assault was reportedly in retaliation for the Deir Yassin massacre five days earlier. Arab forces justified the attack by claiming the convoy had military elements, making it difficult to distinguish combatants from non-combatants. An inquiry later led to an agreement to separate military from humanitarian convoys. The strategic importance of Mount Scopus had led to its blockage by Arab forces, complicating access and escalating tensions. The massacre highlighted the complexities of the conflict and the challenges in protecting medical establishments during warfare.
