21 Apr 1936 Jahr - Jaffa riots

Beschreibung:

The Jaffa riots in April 1936 marked the beginning of the 1936-1939 Arab revolt in Palestine, resulting in the deaths of 14 Jews and 2 Arabs. The violence began on April 19, following the Anabta shooting on April 15, where Arab followers of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam killed two Jewish drivers during a roadblock incident. The subsequent killing of two Arab workers by Irgun members further escalated tensions.

On April 17, during the funeral for one of the Jewish victims, some mourners attacked Arab passersby, inciting further conflict. Two days later, rumors of Arab deaths at the hands of Jews sparked an Arab mob in Jaffa to attack Jewish residents and businesses. This mob, initially composed of Haurani dockworkers, killed and injured several Jews, and caused extensive property damage.

The violence forced about 12,000 Jews to flee Jaffa, with many finding temporary shelter in Tel Aviv. The city faced a significant financial burden, housing 9,500 of the refugees. The situation gradually stabilized over the following months, allowing around 4,000 refugees to return home. By November, all had been rehoused through Jewish charitable efforts, and the refugee camps were closed.

The riots also catalyzed political demands for the annexation of Jewish neighborhoods in Jaffa to Tel Aviv, reflecting the deepening divide and escalating conflict in the region.
