19 Sept 1918 Jahr - Battle of Arara
Beschreibung:
The Battle of Arara occurred on September 19, 1918, during the Battle of Sharon, a component of the larger Battle of Megiddo in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of World War I. This battle saw the British Empire's 60th Division and other units of the XXI Corps, including the 3rd (Lahore), 7th (Meerut), and 75th Divisions, overwhelm the entrenched Ottoman Eighth Army with a combined arms assault featuring intense artillery and naval gunfire. Key to the operation on the British right flank was the 54th (East Anglian) Division alongside the Détachement Français de Palestine et de Syrie (DFPS), which included the French Armenian Legion. This segment of the front pivoted on strategic points, securing a successful envelopment and contributing significantly to the final Allied offensive in the region.
The DFPS and Armenian troops played a pivotal role, capturing essential positions and withstanding counter-attacks, leading to high commendations from Allied commanders. The Battle of Arara ultimately facilitated a series of victories that culminated in the capture of Damascus and Aleppo, signaling the disintegration of Ottoman forces in the area. This set the stage for the Armistice of Mudros, signed approximately five weeks later, marking the end of hostilities in the region.
