1 Jan 1834 Jahr - Looting of Safed

Beschreibung:

The 1834 looting of Safed occurred during the 1834 Peasants' Revolt, lasting for 33 days and resulting in large-scale looting, killings, rapes, and destruction of property. Some attribute the attack to a power vacuum during the wider revolt against Egyptian rule. Many Jews fled the city seeking refuge in neighboring villages, while others found sanctuary in a nearby fortress. British philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore provided support, including a new printing press, to help rebuild the community. The attack was eventually quelled by Lebanese Druze troops under Ibrahim Pasha's orders, and perpetrators were arrested and executed. Despite efforts to restore order and seek compensation, only a small portion of stolen property was recovered, leaving the Jewish community with significant losses.
