As China is one of the greatest threats to this country nowadays, and the gargantuan Bloc of the east only got "stronger" at that point, the Red Scare just kept shaking the West more and more. Everyone gaped in horror as Mao killed off his own people and his opposition, as per usual with this threat - by itself, it isn't distinct, but as part of the Red arc of modern history, this event just added another set of skulls to the Red cairn.
