In 1800, the family of Sor María de Guadalupe commissioned a portrait of their daughter as she entered the Conceptionist convent in Puebla. According to Dr. Lauren Kilroy-Ewbank and Dr. Beth Harris, The Conceptionist order was the earliest New Spanish convent and was reserved for the wealthiest, elite, Spanish women. The oil painting makes many connections to the Virgin Mary, from her holding the small statue of the Christ Child to her covered head. The flowers on her crown and candle connect to the Virgin Mary as they represent virginity, love, and a spiritual marriage to Christ. Her crown calls to Christ’s crown of thorns he wore during the crucifixion.
