Lists and time distribution of 93 women artists, born or educated in Germany, Switzerland and Central-Europe,
who depicted Aphrodite/Venus in their artworks.
The lists are extracted from my fourth Topical Catalogue of the Iconography of Venus from the Middle Ages to Modern Times. This is a sequel to my post of August 6, 2011
'Women Artists who depicted Aphrodite/Venus (I)'
with the lists of women artists from Italy, France and the Low Countries, extracted from the three former catalogues (1).
Why did women artists create artworks with this motif ? What was their inspiration? Did they create original compositions or were they imitating their male-colleagues ? The subject would need an interdisciplinary team of researchers who would analyse the iconography or iconology of these artworks, the socio-cultural background of the artists, their patrons, customers and consumers.
My aim with these lists is merely to contribute to such an interesting investigation, with always in mind one of the principles defined by the renowned art historian Aby Warburg in 1912 (2):
" ...not only pictures considered as the greatest masterpieces of art should be examined."
