Beschreibung:
Organized groups of armed men, known by various names such as patrollers, patterrollers, pattyrollers, or paddy rollers, were responsible for monitoring and enforcing discipline upon slaves in the southern states of the U.S. before the Civil War. These groups, commonly known as slave patrols, were primarily tasked with policing slaves, particularly those who were viewed as defiant or attempted to escape. In addition to land patrols, they also established river patrols to prevent slaves from escaping by boat. The first slave patrol was established in South Carolina in 1704 and the practice spread throughout the colonies until it was abolished after the Civil War.
