“The Professor” Learning to Die For
by John Delia Sr.
Taking a look at death from a different perspective, the movie The Professor comes to Blu-ray and stars Johnny Depp in a role that looked made for him. Broody and sad the film delves into the life of a college professor at a point where everything is falling apart. Depp’s the right choice to bring the character to the screen with his dry sense of humor, cheekiness and ability to handle depressing characters.
In the first chapter we find English Professor Richard Brown (Johnny Depp) being informed that he has lung cancer and it’s in stage 4. At dinner that night and before he can tell his family, his young daughter Olivia (Odessa Young) announces that she is a lesbian. Commending her for letting him know, he gives his approval. His wife Veronica (Rosemarie DeWitt) however, reacts badly and demeans her daughter. However, Veronica also has some news, she tells Richard that she is having an affair with the President of the College where he is teaching.
Thus begins a dark comedy that follows Richard as he tries to sort it all out. Director and writer Wayne Roberts does a good job of putting the film together leading up to a not so surprising ending. He moves the film along at a nice pace dividing it into chapters where periods of time have Richard trying to make up for lost time. His first chapter lays out all the problems that Richard has to face, then subsequent ones deal with each of them.
Johnny Depp plays this intimidating all-knowing professor who whittles his class down to the few he really wants to teach. Knowing that he doesn’t have long to live, he openly tells his students what life is all about and asks them to write about it. It’s his way of opening himself to the realization that he doesn’t have much longer on Earth. Although he works best in comedy, it’s enjoyable to watch Depp bring this character to life on the screen.
The whole support cast is very good, especially Danny Huston who puts on a good show as Richard’s best friend and confidant Peter. He works well with Depp to help bring out the pathos of Richard and letting him know he won’t be alone when all is said and done.
