1 Jan 490 Jahr v. Chr. - Darius Attack on Athens
Beschreibung:
The story behind the first marathon is a legendary tale from ancient Greece, specifically from the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE. According to legend, after the Persian Empire invaded Greece and landed at Marathon, the Athenians, along with their allies, faced a daunting task of defending their city-states from the Persian onslaught.
The Athenian army, led by the general Miltiades, managed to achieve a surprising victory over the Persian forces. After the battle, the Athenians feared that the Persians would sail around the peninsula to attack Athens directly. So, they dispatched a messenger named Pheidippides (sometimes spelled Phidippides) to run to Athens and bring news of the victory.
Pheidippides embarked on an arduous journey, covering approximately 26 miles (42 kilometers) from the battlefield at Marathon to Athens. The legend goes that upon reaching Athens, he delivered the message "Nike!" (meaning "Victory!") and collapsed and died from exhaustion.
However, it's essential to note that the story of Pheidippides' run and his death is primarily a legend. While the Battle of Marathon did occur, the exact details surrounding Pheidippides' run and his fate are not historically verifiable. The earliest accounts of the marathon run date from several centuries after the battle, and there are variations in the story across different sources.
Nevertheless, the legend of Pheidippides' run became widely popular, and it laid the foundation for the modern marathon race.
