The Battle of Michmash, recounted in the Hebrew Bible, pitted Israelites, led by Jonathan, son of King Saul, against Philistines at Michmash. Saul's army, lacking proper weaponry, numbered about 3,000 infantry, with only Jonathan and Saul possessing a spear and a sword between them. The Philistine forces, estimated at around 40,000, included chariots and specialized units.

Saul's camp faced mass desertions while awaiting Samuel, causing distress. Meanwhile, Jonathan, operating stealthily, launched a surprise attack on the Philistine garrison with his armor-bearer, inducing confusion and prompting defections from the Philistines to Saul's side. An earthquake further disarrayed the Philistine forces.

Saul's troops pursued the fleeing Philistines, with Josephus mentioning Saul's involvement in some heretical acts during the aftermath. Casualty figures vary, but Josephus suggests Philistine losses could have been as high as 60,000.
