1 Jan 1863 Jahr - The Emancipation Proclamation
Beschreibung:
Despite the fact that Abraham Lincoln was against the idea of slavery, he didn’t include this as the main goal for the war. He states that his main objective is to save the Union, “and not either to save or destroy slavery.” Though, as the war progressed, he was eventually convinced that the idea to fight for emancipation made sense and this became part of their objective. He knew that the end of slavery would benefit them in many ways such as connecting the war to a moral cause for the union and win support from Europe. Since the beginning of the war, many from the south escaped to the north because of slavery, and this encouraged Lincoln to call for the freedom of all these enslaved people. In January of 1863, Lincolnd signed the Emancipation Proclamation to declare the freedom of all the people enslaved in the states. This act had a small but immediate effect and became a great moral motivation for the Union, suggesting that the Union victory will finalize and eliminate slavery.
