In 1959 Fidel Castro became the prime minister of Cuba, creating a communist state. Because it was in the American sphere of interest, the help of the USSR in an anti-communist putsch (Krushchev sent missiles there) almost caused the outbreak of WWIII. They imposed a blockade on Cuba and demanded the Soviets to remove the missiles.
