The 13 colonies, which later will become the nation of the United States, were founded in many different ways. Some colonies like Pennsylvania were founded by individual owners.

Owning land was technically the only way to increase their economic opportunity. Unfortunately, colonists acquired most of their land through methods such as purchasing, treaties or wars and bought diseases which weakened the native population.
