The 13 American colonies declared they were going to form a new country totally independent from Great Britain. John Adams decided that Thomas Jefferson should write the Declaration of Independence. John Adams chose him because he thought Thomas Jefferson was more qualified to write it because he was a Virginian and he was simply a better writer than him. After that Thomas Jefferson got to work. In the Declaration, Jefferson starts writing the peoples rights, governments decisions, jail reasons, and taxes. The continental congress adopted this important document on July 4, 1776. That is when we celebrate Independence Day.
