In 622, Muhammad led his followers out of persecution in Mecca and into Medina, where the new religion of Islam. This marks the start of Isam's cultural, religious, and military dominance of the Mediterranean and Middle East. Muhammad would later reclaim Mecca before beginning his military conquest of the Arabian Peninsula. The military dominance of Islam would go on to drastically change the landscape of Christianity in Byzantium and the rest of Europe, Africa, and Asia.
