Beschreibung:
Martin Seligman, the leading authority on Positive Psychology, shifted the focus of psychological research and therapy from pathology to the study of human flourishing. He first gained recognition for identifying the phenomenon of learned helplessness during the 1960s. This concept explains how individuals may develop a sense of powerlessness after repeated exposure to adverse events, leading to decreased motivation and the ability to cope with challenges. Building from that idea, Seligman advocates for building on individual strengths and virtues, encouraging people to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives. His work moved interventions and educational programs toward focusing on positive emotional experiences and resilience (VanMattson, 2023, Lecture 13).
