Emperor Theodosius I, who reigned CE 379-395, was influential in several ways. He was a firm Nicene Christian and it was he who called the Council of Constantinople I in CE 381. He also is known for his conflict with the Bishop of Thessalonica, Ambrose, that came about after Theodosius ordered the massacre of an entire city. Most notable, however, was the decree that Theodosius issued in CE 378 establishing Nicene Roman Catholicism as the official Christianity of the Empire. This was also significant as it established a new presidency for affiliation between the Church and the Emperor.
