"The Goophered Grapevine" is considered one of his early works that helped him establish his reputation as an important African American writer. The literary context is apart of Chesnutt's collection called "The Conjure Woman" it explores the themes of race, folklore, and the complexities of African American experiences in he post civil war. Chestnut as he sought to challenge stereotypes and show the African American perspective. The historical context the story was written during a time of Reconstruction in the United States which was a time of significant social and political change after the civil war. it reflects the lingering effects faced by African Americans in racially divided society.
