1 Jan 1860 Jahr - 1860 Election
Beschreibung:
The 1860 election coincided with the slavery debates and acts/laws, making it one of the more divisive elections. Lincoln, Breckinridge, and Douglas were the three main runners, with Lincoln being a Republican and the latter two being Democrats. While Lincoln won the popular vote and the electoral college votes, it could have been a very different story as the two democratic factions (Southern and Northern) together had gathered a larger number of votes than Lincoln did, but the votes were split between the two, causing neither of them to have enough to compete with Lincoln. This was an extremely significant election as this presidential term included the Civil War and Lincoln was an abolitionist, meaning that the southern states were the ones who seceded from the union
