Beschreibung:
At this time there were about twenty peoples with different languages and cultures on the Italian peninsula. The three largest were the Celts (who were also called Gauls) at the top of the north, the Etruscans in the middle part of the peninsula and the Greeks in the south. In the landscape around the Tiber River there were several smaller tribes who spoke the Latin language. As the city of Rome grew, various conflicts arose between these tribes and those who lived in the city. In the battles, the Romans won and Rome thus became a city-state with power over the entire landscape.
An important cause of the conflicts between the Romans and the other peoples was the struggle for the profitable trade. The Romans wanted as much of the goods as possible to be sold and bought in Rome. The inhabitants of the Greek city-states of southern Italy became alarmed as they saw Roman merchants taking over more and more of the wine and olive oil trade they had previously managed. Ancient sources tell us that Greeks tried to prevent Roman merchant ships from entering Greek ports. The conflict with the Greeks turned into several wars during the 2nd century BC. But the Roman armies were better equipped and organized, and the wars therefore ended with one Greek city-state after another being forced to surrender.
Most of what we call Italy today was controlled by Roman soldiers in the late 2nd century BC. The exceptions were the Gauls in the far north and the Greeks in Sicily. To gain even better control over all the areas they had conquered, the Romans divided the new lands into provinces they called provinces . These were governed by governors appointed in Rome. A new empire – the Roman Empire – had arisen in the Mediterranean area.
