In 1920, upper Silesia held a plebiscite to determine whether to join Germany or Poland, 700 000 people voted for Germany and 500 000 voted for Poland. Germany wanted the whole of Upper Silesia, but the LON knew this would displease many. In the end, the LON declared that Germany would have 2/3 of Upper Silesia, and Poland would have the remaining 1/3.

Overall this was a success for the LON because the LON recognized the large amount of people who voted for Poland even though Germany won the vote. The splitting of upper Silesia also prevented conflict between the 2 countries, both countries agreed and no casualties took place
