"In South Carolina, slaves are prohibited from hiring themselves out. Slaveowners continue to hire out their slaves for additional profit, however.

Elsewhere, especially in urban areas, slaves' ability to hire themselves out became a valuable way for them to assert some independence, acquire new skills, and communicate with people outside their owners' household."
