28 Jun 1919 Jahr - Treaty of Versailles signed
Beschreibung:
Germany was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles, a humiliating document that hurt them economically and militarily. They were not invited to the peace conference, and so they despised the treaty, calling it a dictated peace, or Diktat
The main points can be remembered with LAMB

Land

~ Land was taken from Germany and given to surrounding countries.
~ Any remaining colonies were given to either the UK or France.
~ They were prohibited from uniting with the new Austria.
~ The Rhineland was de-militarized - this was their border with France.

The land taken away, such as the Saar and Alsace-Lorraine, was very important for the economy of Germany of steel, iron and coal, and had a severe impact on them.

Army

~ The army must be made of no more than 100,000 soldiers.
~ Having an air force, tanks and submarines were all banned, as was research into these.

This meant Germany could no longer be a great power, as it severely weakened it. They also could not defend themselves against any other attack.

Money

~ Germany was forced to pay for all the damages in the war. This was called war reparations.
~The price was set to be £6.6 billion and to be paid annually.
~The majority of this would go to Belgium and France who suffered the most.

The weakened Germany was already in debt, and could not afford the new terms. This would have meant they be paying back for roughly a century.

Blame

~ Germany was expected to take full blame for the war.
~ This was known as the 'War Guilt' clause

This allowed the treaty to be justified in its harshness. Germans hated this, as they believed the war was fought in self-defense, which was only partially true.
