The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was the first true mobile phone. It weighed 1.75lbs and was capable of storing 80 contacts.

Mobile phones have obviously evolved since 1983, however each evolution still needed to consider HCI. As you can see from the somewhat jokey picture, the first mobile phones probably weren't hitting all the UX marks, however these were the pioneers, and served a purpose. As mobile phones evolved, they moved away from only one usage of phone calling, to being multifunctional.
