In February, North Korean state media announced it had conducted an underground nuclear test and had a signature of a magnitude 5 earthquake by China Earthquake Networks. Japan called an emergency UN meeting and South Korea raised its military alert status. Tight economic sanctions for the country were agreed on by the UN immediately. One German geologic center found that the blast could have been as strong as the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
